The peripheral neuropathies are mainly by trauma, compression, ischemia, or other diseases such as neuritis or metabolic neuropathy. Rehabilitation is often defined as the third level of prevention, the first level being health promotion and specific protection, and the second the early diagnosis and prompt treatment. Therefore, the prevention of the disability due to secondary complications is an essential feature in the therapeutic procedures.
The authors have found that 27 cases (25.96%) of the peripheral neuropathies have developed during medical care which could have been prevented with thoughtful care and close observation during electrodiagnostic procedures of 104 cases caused by mechanical injury from January, 1978 to June, 1980.
The 27 cases of the peripheral neuropathy conditions were analyzed with the causes and injured nerves according to the 104 cases of diagnosed groups.
The results were as follows.
1. The causes of 27 subjects were revealed that 14 cases (51.85%) with compression, 8 cases (29.63%) with injection injury, and 5 cases (18.52%) with operation.
2. The injured nerves were 13 in peroneal, 6 in sciatic, each 3 in sacral plexus and ulna, and each 1 in median and combine with median & ulna respectively
3. The most injured nerves according to the causes were -13 peroneal nerves by compression, 6 sciatic nerves by injection, and 3 sacral plexus injuries by operation respectively.
